What is herbal medicine?
Herbal medicine is the use of plants to treat ill health on a physical, emotional and spiritual level. It is the oldest form of medicine, and is still used by traditional cultures all over the world. Today there is a growing body of scientific research that supports and builds on this traditional knowledge base. In fact most pharmaceutical drugs are either extracted directly from plants or synthetically formulated based on plant compounds.
Why choose herbal medicine?
Plants and animals have co-evolved for millions of years and our biochemistry is hardwired to depend on plants for survival. Increasingly an awareness of the complexity of our body is becoming apparent. Our body is actually better able to assimilate and safely work with complex chemical mixtures than with single compounds. It is really only in the last century that humans have intensively moved away from whole medicines in support of single chemicals. A herbal approach is a return to the knowledge that our bodies come from the earth and require the gifts of the earth for health and wellbeing.
